In our Magazine Leather Company interviews, we made an interview with Zain REHAN from C & L Industries from Pakistan.
Mr. Zain REHAN, Could you tell us about your company C & L INDUSTRIES?
C & L Industries, steeped in history and driven by innovation, traces its roots back to the 1960s in Karachi, Pakistan. Our story started with a grand idea: turning animal skins into useful resources. Our ancestors, including the honourable Chairman Emeritus Abdul Shaikh Hannan, pioneered this innovative endeavour. Inspired by his vision, Khas (Pvt) Ltd. was established, setting the stage for the development of what would eventually become a major player in the Pakistani leather market.
Khas (Pvt) Ltd. carved its path with an unwavering commitment to innovation. Embracing revolutionary techniques and cutting-edge machinery, it fearlessly reshaped the industry landscape, expanding its reach across diverse regions. This dedication was recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious distinction of being a multi-year recipient of the “Best Exporter of Leather and Leather Gloves” award. Moreover, Khas cemented its leadership position by establishing itself as a leading manufacturer in terms of annual leather and glove export volumes. Further solidifying its reputation, Khas embarked on successful collaborative shoe manufacturing ventures with renowned Italian and international partners. Today, it stands as a network of seven independent tanneries, each a beacon of excellence, with C & L Industries proudly taking its place among them.
In 2010, our narrative took a bold new turn with the establishment of C & L Industries, a state-of-the-art tannery in Karachi. Our focus remains on sheep, goat, and cow leather, while maintaining the flexibility to produce buffalo leather for specific client needs. Under the visionary leadership of Director Rehan Shaikh Hannan, we have tirelessly pushed the boundaries of leather, footwear technology, and design, earning recognition as trailblazers in both shoe production and leather gloves.
Today, C & L Industries stands tall as a leader in the leather industry, recognized for its unwavering commitment to quality and innovation. This dedication is woven into the very fabric of our history, from our humble beginnings in the 1960s to the cutting-edge facility we operate today. We invite you to join us on our journey, where tradition seamlessly merges with technology, and style is inextricably linked to substance. Become part of the C & L narrative and experience the enduring legacy of leather excellence.
What would you like to say about Why Leather? and Leather Processing?
Imagine a material that’s as tough and beautiful as your favourite well-worn jacket yet grows from the earth and returns to it gently when its time is done. That’s the magic of leather, a naturally durable and sustainable choice that stands in stark contrast to many petroleum-based vegan alternatives.
While some vegan leathers offer an ethical edge by avoiding animal products, their environmental impact can be a hidden thorn. Many are crafted from plastics, which guzzle fossil fuels in their production and linger in landfills for centuries, releasing harmful microplastics into the environment as they degrade. This raises a critical question: are we simply swapping one environmental concern for another?
Leather, on the other hand, tells a different story. As a by-product of the meat industry, it utilizes a resource that would otherwise go to waste. Its tanning process, while not without its environmental challenges, has seen significant advancements towards more sustainable practices. Moreover, leather’s natural durability means products crafted from it can last for years, even decades, reducing the need for frequent replacements and the associated environmental footprint.
So, the next time you’re considering a new jacket, bag, or pair of shoes, remember genuine leather might just be the more responsible and sustainable choice. It’s a material that celebrates nature’s bounty, offering longevity, beauty, and a story etched in every fibre. Choose wisely, and together we can tread lighter on our planet, one step at a time.
What are the important details in the use of leather? (Regarding leather type selection or colour selection)
When selecting leather, crucial considerations include the type of leather and the choice of color. Sheep leather, valued for its softness, is ideal for gloves and high-end garments, while goat leather’s durability and lightweight nature make it suitable for fashion accessories. Cow leather, versatile and durable, finds applications in furniture, footwear, and bags, and buffalo leather’s strength is often harnessed for heavy-duty items. Natural colors showcase the inherent beauty of the material, ranging from light beige to rich brown, while dyed options offer a spectrum of choices, from classic black to vibrant hues. Leather develops a unique patina over time, adding character to the material. The finish and texture, whether smooth for a refined look or distressed for a more casual appearance, contribute to the overall aesthetic. Additionally, considering the intended use, climate conditions, and the quality and grade of the leather ensures a well-informed selection, resulting in a product that not only meets functional requirements but also aligns with design preferences.

What are your expectations from the Pakistani market and the markets in general?
Our expectations from the Pakistani market and markets in general are optimistic, with a belief that the Pakistani market will experience a boost post-election. Furthermore, we anticipate a positive overall trend in global markets. Since the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have observed a steady recovery, reaching levels comparable to the pre-pandemic period. Notably, there is an increasing demand for sustainability and eco-friendly products, such as vegetable-tanned leather, reflecting a global shift towards environmentally conscious choices. In response to this demand, we are committed to promoting responsible practices and dispelling misinformation through online education initiatives on our social media platforms. It is our belief that informed consumers make better choices, and as a responsible leather tannery, we are dedicated to providing accurate information to counter misconceptions, particularly in the context of sustainable and vegan products.
Do you have markets all over the world?
Currently, our market presence extends to the European and Middle Eastern regions, where we have established strong partnerships. However, recognizing the potential for growth and evolving global demands, we are actively exploring opportunities in other markets, particularly in smaller yet promising regions. Our strategic approach involves tapping into emerging markets, with a keen focus on oceanic countries, where we anticipate a substantial rise in global demand.
The goal is to diversify our market reach and cater to regions that experience all four seasons, aligning with our commitment to providing versatile leather products suitable for various climates. Is there a shortage of personnel in the profession of leather and leather products?
Is there a shortage of personnel in the profession of leather and leather products?
In addition to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions, we have observed a notable trend with newer brands entering the market. Recognizing that customer preferences may be evolving, it becomes imperative for our industry to strategically position itself to capture the interest of these emerging market segments.
While facing challenges such as a decrease in demand and the closure of major tanneries, there is also an opportunity to pivot towards innovation and market adaptation. The influx of newer brands suggests a potential shift in consumer preferences and demands, signaling a need for our industry to be agile and responsive to these changing dynamics.
In response to these market trends, our focus should not only be on retaining existing customers but also on capturing the attention of these emerging segments. This necessitates a proactive approach in understanding the evolving needs and preferences of consumers, as well as aligning our product offerings and marketing strategies accordingly.
By fostering a culture of innovation and flexibility within our industry, we can position ourselves to not only weather the current challenges but also to thrive in a marketplace that is undergoing transformation. Strategic collaborations, product diversification, and a customer-centric approach will be essential in establishing a competitive edge and ensuring long-term sustainability in the face of these dynamic market conditions.
Finally, what would you like to say to people who have devoted themselves to the profession?
To those dedicated to the profession, I would like to convey a message that resonates across all industries and professions: never give up and always evolve with time. In an era of constant change, adaptability is key to staying relevant and thriving.
Take the example of the shift from physical newspapers to online platforms, and now the emergence of video journalism on platforms like YouTube. As leather manufacturers and individuals, it’s crucial to recognize the need for evolution. Embrace new technologies, techniques, and sustainable practices to navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities. Leather, being a unique natural product integral to our lives, presents us with the responsibility to move towards eco-friendly and sustainable practices. By staying open to innovation and incorporating new methods, we not only weather tough phases but also contribute to the longevity and positive impact of our profession. Let’s evolve, learn, and apply new approaches to ensure the enduring significance of our craft.
