Turkey “Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association” (IDMIB) Vice Chairman of the Board and President of the Turkish Leather Industrialists’ Association Burak Uyguner said, “The approximate raw material value of the animal skins cut during the Sacrifice Festival is around 500 million TL. After these are processed, the added value reaches up to 5 billion TL.’ said.
Noting that one third of the animals in Turkey were slaughtered during the Eid al-Adha, Uyguner said, “The holiday period is a very important period for the leather industry. It is a period when we meet our raw material needs.
The victim needs to be slaughtered and swimming correctly. Then the salting process should be done and shipped to the tanneries quickly. If you can’t salt it yourself, you need to deliver the leather to the organization that can salt and reserve it as soon as possible. When we do not do this, we damage the raw material. Putting the leather in the nylon bag and waiting for 3 days, then shipping it will ruin the product and make it unusable.”
Explaining that they anticipate that approximately 1 million cattle will be slaughtered during Eid al-Adha, Uyguner said:
“The approximate raw material value of the animal skins slaughtered during Eid al-Adha is around 500 million TL. After these are processed, the added value goes up to 5 billion TL.
Apart from Eid al-Adha, we, as tanneries, are recyclers of the meat industry. A thousand trucks of leather are produced every day in the world. We process these leathers in an environmentally friendly manner and bring them into the economy. Otherwise, they will either be buried or burned. This will cause a major environmental disaster.”
Emphasizing that leathers go through many mechanical and chemical processes after entering the tannery, Uyguner said, “First, they go through a process called shedding and tanning. Then, a mechanical touch is applied that adjusts the thickness of the product according to the place of use.
After the wet dyeing and drying processes, it is transformed into a form that can be used by the bag maker or shoemaker with the upper dyeing process. The next job of creating added value is their duty.”
Talking about the value of the sacrifice skins, Uyguner said, “After salting, 40 kilograms of skin comes out of an average 500-kilogram cattle. The market equivalent of this is currently around 650-700 TL. Of course, we do not know what the pricing will be in the market this year.” made its assessment.
