Despite challenges, Türkiye’s leather sector aims to achieve new export records. The Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association (İDMİB) awarded 87 companies in 5 categories at the “Export Achievers 2024 Award Ceremony.”
Speaking at the event, Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) Leather and Leather Products Sector Board Chairman and IDMIB President Güven Karaca said:
“We will be bolder, we will build stronger brands, we will digitalize, and we will be sustainable. We will invest more in education and design. With the support of public authorities, we will bring the Turkish leather sector into the world’s top 10 exporters.”
Sector Demands
Karaca emphasized four urgent areas of support needed for sustainable growth:
- Low-interest and collateral-backed financing,
- Control of imports,
- Policies to encourage production and investment,
- Solutions for skilled workforce in labor-intensive sectors.
Encouraging Export Results
Although Türkiye’s total leather exports fell by 17.9% in 2024, the sector achieved remarkable growth in several markets:
- Shoe exports to the US rose by 4%,
- Exports to Chile increased by 17%,
- Exports to Scandinavian countries surged by 116%.
The saddlery sector succeeded with high unit prices in Italy, while leather and fur apparel secured a strong global share of 5.1%.
Support & Future Vision
Deputy Minister of Trade Ö. Volkan Ağar said: “With its deep heritage, strong production capacity, and design vision, Türkiye’s leather sector will strengthen its position in global trade.”
TIM President Mustafa Gültepe added that the sector will compensate for 2025 losses and make a stronger breakthrough in 2026.
