Held in Shanghai, China, from August 31 to September 3, 2025, the 22nd UITIC International Technical Footwear Congress brought global attention with the theme “Competitiveness and Sustainability of the Footwear Industry in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
During the first days, participants visited leading Chinese footwear factories, research centers, and training institutions, observing automation, digital marking, and sustainable production in practice. At the Saina (Suzhou) factory tour, visitors witnessed innovations such as smart cutting machines, digital branding systems, and automated assembly lines, showcasing how automation and precision are shaping next-generation footwear manufacturing.
Research, Certifications, and Global Standards
UITIC, together with ICEC and CLIA, prepared a report comparing the interpretation of “leather” and “eco-leather” under the UNI 11427 standard. The contrasting perspectives between East and West opened up insightful debates for the future of the sector.
Day Two: Success Stories and AI Panels
The second day highlighted real-world applications and the transformative power of AI:
- Cristina Marques (CTCP): Lessons from the ISOV project on revolutionizing skill intelligence.
- Ana Maria Vasconcelos (BELCINTO): Insights from “learning factories” in the leather goods sector.
- Wei Ming Gu (Shuangchi Enterprise): Customer-to-Manufacturer (C2M) digital transformation in footwear.
- Linli/Linna Cao/Zheng (BM Technology): How AI strengthens sustainable footwear design and sales.
The day concluded with the panel “The Power of AI for the Footwear Business,” emphasizing how artificial intelligence is reshaping design, production, and sustainability.
DESMA’s Vision
As a Silver Sponsor, DESMA’s Managing Director Christian Decker focused on AI’s impact on competitiveness and sustainability. Using advanced AI video simulations, Decker illustrated how complex outcomes can be visualized beyond traditional diagrams, offering new perspectives for efficient and eco-friendly production.
Networking and Cultural Highlights
Beyond the technical sessions, UITIC offered rich networking opportunities. A gala dinner on the Huangpu River delighted attendees, while visits to ACLE and Moda China fairs showcased the latest trends and innovations in the leather and footwear industries.
