The world’s oldest sailmaker, Ratsey & Lapthorn, transforms 250 years of maritime legacy into a timeless accessory line. The handcrafted bags blend British craftsmanship with the spirit of classic sailing and modern luxury.
British sailmaker Ratsey & Lapthorn has entered the lifestyle sector with a striking launch of handcrafted leather and canvas bags. Established in 1790 and known for producing sails for some of the most iconic vessels in history, the brand now brings its artisanal expertise to the luxury accessories market.
The new collection draws inspiration from functional pieces found in the brand’s archives, blending the aesthetic of classic seamanship with elegant craftsmanship. The bags incorporate traditional techniques such as hand-braided rope, hand-stitched brass rings, and the iconic Ratsey diamond stitch. Each item is handmade in England and Italy in small, numbered batches and is equipped with NFC technology to enable traceability.
Standout pieces include the £2,000 ‘Ditty’ bucket bag with a structured leather base, drawstring closure, and linen canvas body; the ‘Ratsey’ tote bag featuring diamond-reinforced stitching and solid leather handles; and the playful ‘Rat’ bag, available in two sizes, which celebrates the brand’s iconic red crescent sail insignia.
“The launch of this collection not only honors our past but is also a vital step toward preserving the spirit and soul of true craftsmanship for the future,” said CEO Jim Hartley.
With this collection, Ratsey & Lapthorn revives its lesser-known heritage in bag-making and repositions itself at the crossroads of functionality, elegance, and storytelling—bringing the spirit of the sea to the luxury lifestyle world.
