“What if a label told me which blouse was designed to last?” With the title of “What if the label told me which blouse was designed for longevity?”, it would be a transparent approach to the end-user to ensure that durability, natural and environmentally friendly products are produced and produced with natural environmentally friendly raw materials.
Having a standardized methodology for measuring sustainability can help make fashion and textiles greener.
Make the Label Count is an international coalition of organizations representing a wide range of natural fiber producers and environmental groups, but we all have one thing in common. We all want to ensure that sustainability claims for natural products and textiles in the EU are fair and credible.
Fossil fuel products, fabrics and raw materials are damaging our planet. Calling on EU legislators to recognize the environmental benefits of natural fibers and to fulfill the promise of “Fast Fashion Out of Fashion”, the ‘Make the Label Count’ team has created a campaign to protect our planet for all humanity.
The petition is also important for the Leather and Footwear sector as it conveys stakeholders’ concerns about the limitations of the Commission’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology, especially for the apparel and footwear product category. PEF methodology: “As the fashion and textile industry has a very large environmental footprint, the European Commission is reviewing sustainability claims and eco-design requirements in clothing and footwear.” The Commission is exploring using the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology to support green claims and inform eco design requirements.
The signatories of the petition call on the European Commission to:
- Recognize the benefits of natural fibers in new sustainability policies
- Ensure robust, science-based environmental criteria to prevent greenwashing
- Promote a responsible fashion model that limits fast fashion and encourages biodegradable, renewable and recyclable fibers.
