London welcomes the next generation of footwear innovators. The Cordwainers Footwear Awards return this year with a strong focus on sustainability, traditional shoemaking, and creative excellence.
A Celebration of Craft and Creativity
Globally recognized as a prestigious platform in footwear design, the Cordwainers Footwear Awards bring together emerging talents and industry legends once again in 2025. This year’s event will take place on Thursday, June 12, at Saddlers’ Hall, located near London’s historic shoemaking district, Cordwainer Ward.
The awards not only spotlight visual appeal but also honor innovation in sustainability, traditional shoemaking techniques, and technical excellence—marking a dynamic evolution in the industry.
Honoring Masters, Inspiring the Future
The opening speech of the 2025 edition will be delivered by renowned fashion and footwear icon Patrick Cox. The Sue Saunders Award for Excellence, one of the highest honors by the Cordwainers Company, will be presented to legendary designer Prof. Datuk Jimmy Choo OBE.
For the first time, the event will feature the Craft of Shoemaking Award, recognizing excellence in handmade footwear, sponsored by the distinguished artisan workshop Carréducker.
Tomorrow’s Designers in the Spotlight
This year, 34 design students from across the UK submitted their work, described by judges as “simply stunning.” The jury was co-chaired by Kristina Blahnik (CEO of Manolo Blahnik) and celebrated designer Sophia Webster. Finalists will not only compete for cash prizes but also gain networking and mentorship opportunities from top figures in the British footwear industry.
Cordwainers Co-Director Jonathan Church stated:
“It has been a privilege to witness the growth of the Cordwainers Footwear Awards. With an industry valued at £730 million in the UK alone, we continue to honor the heritage and excellence of British shoemaking.”
New Categories: Sneakers and Sustainability
A new Stuart Weitzman MA Award has been introduced this year, recognizing designs by postgraduate students. Two additional categories, the Sneaker/Athleisure Award and the Sustainability Award, reflect the evolving demands of both the fashion market and the planet—highlighting innovation with environmental consciousness.
Visuals by a Fashion Icon
The graphic identity of this year’s event was crafted by Barbara Hulanicki OBE, founder of the iconic fashion brand Biba. Her design adds a stylish visual signature to an event that celebrates creativity in every form.
