Brazil is stepping into a new era of transparency in the footwear industry. According to a new regulation by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), all producers and importers must include composition labels on shoes beginning in 2026.
Labels will feature information such as brand name, CNPJ tax number, country of origin, size, and a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) code, along with pictograms showing the main materials used.
What was once voluntary is now a legal requirement, and non-compliance could result in fines of up to USD 280,000.
Abicalçados President Haroldo Ferreira stated, “The contents of shoes will now be visible — a strong step toward consumer protection.”
The measure is expected to improve traceability, reduce counterfeiting, and build greater trust in Brazil’s footwear market.
