Joint consensus full traceability project in the meat and leather industry in Brazil

In Amozon Legal, the meat industry and leather industry combined against deforestation and the full traceability agreement started in June, and by December the number of cattle tracked reached 113 thousand animals from 40 enterprises. Durlicouros, Brazil’s largest established company, joined the project to ensure that the leathers supplied are free from deforestation and other socio-environmental crimes.

The issue of sustainability, traceability and transparency united manufacturers at Amazon Legal. The Durlicouros tannery is “extremely proud to lead sustainable actions like this, together with other major companies in the sector, and contribute to the preservation of the Legal Amazon. This initiative not only represents a significant breakthrough in the industry, but also reinforces our commitment to transparency, ethics and respect for the environment. “Together, we are building a more sustainable future for all of us.” said.

The pilot project started in June with the expectation that the number of animals monitored would reach 20 thousand by December, but 113 thousand animals from 40 enterprises have already been reached. Calves are monitored individually from birth; In some cases, companies can retroactively certify animals thanks to documentation from farm owners.

“We are being isolated,” says Roberto Paulinelli, owner of the Rio Maria slaughterhouse in Pará, about the growing pressure on Brazilian livestock to ensure that meat and hides destined for international markets do not come from cattle raised in these regions.

Durlicouros sustainability manager Ivens Domingos said: “Usually traceability is usually done per animal group, which makes the process less secure than the model developed in this project. “This puts us at the forefront of accessing markets. “We are making a major investment and improving internal quality processes,” he said.

Approximately 75% of the six million leathers the company produces annually are exported, primarily to Italy, China and the USA. Durlicouros sells tanned (wet blue), semi-finished (shell), and finished leathers to other companies that process them for use in automotive upholstery, furniture, or shoes.

Within the scope of the project, it allows customers and consumers to access information on consumer farms through the “Leather ID” platform.
