The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists’ Societies (IULTCS) has officially announced the start of a new presidential term, marking an important moment for the global leather science and technology community.
In his inaugural address, the new President described the appointment as both an honour and a significant responsibility, highlighting the Union’s unique diversity of expertise, experience, and perspectives from across the world. He underlined that IULTCS continues to provide governance and strategic direction for its member societies and supporting members, strengthening global cooperation through education, science, publications, communication, and the promotion of the leather industry.
The President expressed appreciation to all national societies for their continued engagement as the new administration begins, and extended thanks to the Executive Committee and Assembly representatives for their ongoing support and involvement.
Special recognition was given to outgoing President Dr. Joan Carles Castell for his dedicated leadership and lasting contributions, particularly his extensive work with ISO and CEN leather-related working groups. His efforts, it was noted, will continue to shape the sector for years to come.
The announcement also welcomed Dr. Giancarlo Levato as the new Vice President, acknowledging his early and active support—especially in the renewed engagement with ISO and CEN standardisation work. Emphasising that leadership is a shared responsibility, the President expressed his commitment to close collaboration within the executive team.
Gratitude was also extended to Secretary Dr. Luis Zugno for his essential role in ensuring the Union’s effective operation, including coordination, communication through IULTCS Newsleather, meeting organisation, and maintaining strong relationships with partner organisations.
In addition, the Chairs of the IULTCS Commissions—covering Environment, Normalization, Training and Education, Sustainability, Liaison, IUC, and IUP-IUF Test Methods—were thanked for their ongoing technical, scientific, and strategic contributions. Their work, the statement noted, underpins the Union’s credibility and influence within the global leather industry.
Looking ahead, the President emphasised the importance of open, rigorous, and respectful scientific debate, stating that progress in leather science has always emerged through questioning assumptions and challenging established practices. While acknowledging that his views may not always align with the mainstream, he reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that IULTCS remains a trusted, transparent, and forward-looking voice for leather science worldwide.
